Dateline: April 16,2008

We are having a great start to our 2008 show season and are heading into what might be one of our busiest months yet! April will close with the Minnesota Horse Expo April 25-27 at the MN State Fair Grounds. The NCRHA will host an informational booth on reining to promote our North Central shows and programs. We need energetic people to wave the reining flag throughout this event so please contact cclark@dishup.us if you can attend and man the booth for a few important hours! I will bet 2008 NCRHA Win-A-Saddle Circuit sponsor, Twister Trailers, will have something there for us to walk through and admire as well. This is a large and well attended expo - plan to spend the day! http://www.mnhorseexpo.org/

Our next show is the NCRHA Extravaganza in Fergus Falls, MN. The Red Horse Ranch is a great facility to enjoy the fun of Extrav Derby action. Don't forget to consider your chances aboard your 4, 5 or 6 year old in category 2 competition. Last year Limited Non Pro rider Jonathan Green swept all three non pro divisions aboard A Genuine Story while there was a three way run off in the Open leaving Jeff Kasten at the top of the heap with Magnum Dun It. The derby money has risen to be $3000 added in Open and Non Pro / $1500 in Intermediate Open and Intermediate Non Pro and $1000 in both Limited Open and Non Pro. It will be a good contest!

There are two cool opportunities in May to improve your skills and understanding of showing and training the reining horse. First a schooling show will be held at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls lab farm-horse arena on May 17th. NRHA judges will critique runs and give suggestions on how to improve patterns and maneuvers. Its called the KISS Show (Keep It Simple Schooling Show) and proceeds will benefit the NCRHyA. All ages and levels of reiners are invited to attend. Lunch will be available from the UWRF Rodeo Club. For details click: http://www.ncrha.com/schedules/kiss%20color%20flyer.jpg

The following weekend, May 24-25th, will feature NRHA Professionals Tim McQuay and Brian Welman in the 2008 Regional Clinic Series to Benefit the NRHyA also at the UW-RF horse arena. While this clinic is not associated with NCRHA, it is obviously super to have this clinic located in the heart of our area. According to NRHA - slots are filling fast!

$250 for adult riders/$150 for youth riders/$25 to audit per day.

Space is limited - please contact Heather Cline for reservations: 405-946-7400 ext. 137 or youth@nrha.com

The Winona Show, April 5-6, was well attended and classes were evenly sized throughout the Green, Rookie and Limited Non Pro classes with around 20 entries in each both days. The Youth 14-18 was as salty as ever and something occurred to me while watching these young people warm up in the pen... they were all warming up their own horses, preparing each maneuver to exhibit. I wonder how common that really is throughout the horse world? (OK, excluding P.O.A.)

The Board of Directors realignment continued last month with an election from within the board to seat Chad Clark as NCRHA Vice President and accepting Tammy Monson as an appointed board member. We are back at full strength and headed down the road again. Make sure to give new President Al Gadola your good tidings as he takes the reins from Monte Anderman. Plans for the 2008 NCRHA Futurity are forming around the knowledge that we cannot have a BBQ this year. Replacement activities are being explored! Ideas (and sponsorships) are always welcome!

WE are all excited to be back in the swing of the show season - all we need is for the weather to get with the swing too!
